CDC today announced a comprehensive community benefits package worth up to $225 million for the Wagga Wagga community, which is linked to its proposed data centre development at Gregadoo.
The benefits package includes a proposed Voluntary Planning Agreement with Council – equivalent to a minimum of 1% of the development cost across the entirety of the project – as well as a further $75 million from CDC for community initiatives across the region. This package is subject to the project being approved and proceeding as planned.
CDC Founder and CEO, Greg Boorer, said the company wanted to build genuine partnerships with the community.
"This is not about building a data centre and walking away. We want to be part of Wagga Wagga's future," Mr Boorer said.
"If this project proceeds, the community should see real, visible and lasting benefits from the investment. This might be new infrastructure, housing, sporting facilities and community services as well as opportunities for local suppliers and businesses, and jobs and skills pathways for local people."
CDC’s contributions could support local priorities including housing, sport and recreation, arts and culture, education and skills, workforce development, environmental improvements and community infrastructure. The local community will have the opportunity to help identify priority initiatives as part of the engagement process.
"We're putting forward these commitments because we believe major projects should leave a lasting legacy,” Mr Boorer said.
“If the project is approved and proceeds as planned, we want to return the trust placed in us by investing in the things that matter most to the community. We look forward to working alongside Council and the people of Wagga Wagga to identify those priorities and, as the project progresses, help turn them into reality."
The announcement came following Wagga Wagga City Council’s decision to support the sale of land to CDC at Gregadoo. The proposed development remains subject to assessment and approval by the NSW Government through the State Significant Development process, which is expected to take place over the coming months.
The proposed campus already represents one of the largest private investments ever contemplated in regional Australia. In addition to the benefits package, the development has the potential to generate significant economic, employment and infrastructure benefits for Wagga Wagga and the wider Riverina over coming decades.
If the project is approved and proceeds as planned, CDC will maximise local participation and ensure the benefits of this investment extend well beyond the project boundaries and deliver long lasting value for the broader community.
Examples include working with local suppliers and businesses wherever possible, supporting regional jobs during construction and ongoing operations, and partnering with education and training providers to create pathways for apprentices, trainees, graduates and local workers to develop capabilities that support both the project and the region's broader economic growth.
CDC is currently engaging with the Wagga Wagga community on the proposed project and is holding a series of information sessions at the Transgrid Discovery Hub, 27 Kincaid St Wagga Wagga.
