Western Sydney International Airport deploys digital air traffic control tower

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) has publicly announced their partnership with CDC for the deployment of their digital air traffic control tower. This innovative project will make it one of the first airports in Australia to utilise a digital tower, leveraging the expertise of CDC, Frequentis Australasia and Airservices. The digital tower will feature over 20 high-resolution cameras to monitor the airport and airspace, transmitting data to a central Digital Aerodrome Service (DAS) in Eastern Creek, where air traffic controllers will be stationed.

The DAS will enhance air traffic management with advanced tools such as object tracking, night vision, and image enhancement, providing capabilities beyond the human eye. The system is designed with robust security measures, including three lines of defense against cyber threats and individually cabled cameras to ensure continuous operation. The new airport, set to begin operations in 2026, will handle up to 10 million passengers annually and create 70 new jobs in air traffic control, maintenance, and training services.
