Work commenced today on the site of a new 150 megawatt data campus in Laverton, which is set to generate thousands of local jobs and inject more than $2.7 billion into the economy during construction.

The project is the latest investment announcement from CDC, a company founded in Australia and fast becoming one of the leading providers of data centres worldwide. The Laverton campus will significantly enhance CDC’s footprint in Melbourne, complementing its existing data centre in Brooklyn and bringing its total capacity in the state to over 780-megawatts.

CDC Founder and CEO, Greg Boorer, was joined by local, state and federal government representatives as well as customers, construction and delivery partners to mark the occasion and turn the first sod.

“I am delighted to expand our presence in Melbourne and offer more customers access to our secure, reliable and connected data centres,” Mr Boorer said.

“We have a solid base of existing customers in Victoria who have growing demands as well as interest from new customers who want highly secure and resilient access to their data. So, the decision to construct this facility in Laverton was a logical next step in our growth plans and aligned to our commitment to support the progress of our customers.”

The development and operation of CDC’s data centre will generate thousands of jobs and inject billions of dollars into multiple industries including construction, civil and electrical engineering, manufacturing, equipment hire, security, facilities management, trades and corporate services.

The project comes at a time when cost of living pressures and financial uncertainty are causing concerns for many businesses and families. Mr Boorer said CDC was humbled by the impact its investment will have on the community.

“I am proud that CDC can play our role in generating thousands of local jobs and invest billions of dollars into Victorian economy,” Mr Boorer said.

“It is not lost on me – or my team – that the Laverton data campus will be game changing for this region, as well as the customers it will serve.”

CDC’s data centres support customers across key sectors including critical infrastructure, government, research and education, and technology.  Other customer segments are emerging as they identify the need for greater reliability, flexibility and sustainability to achieve their business goals and take advantage of opportunities enabled by AI, cloud and advanced technologies.
